Empuries Travel Guide – The Greco-Roman Ruins

The ancient trading routes of another time are gloriously preserved at the staggeringly impressive Greco-Roman ruins of Empuries, Catalonia. Prepare to be blown away by the sheer size of this area, which contains the ruins of a Greek and Roman city on the modern day Costa Brava. This area has over 2500 years of history; and the remains are some of the most breathtaking in Europe. You will want to make sure you have got a good camera with you to capture the ancient beauty of Empuries.

About

Excavations of this area began in the early part of the twentieth century and continue today. What an amazing effort it has been from archaeologists over the past century to get us to this stage; they have given a great gift to the world. Walk around the fruits of their labour and see columns, streets and art from a time in history most often seen depicted in Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters.

When you get there you can get an audio guide of Empuries, available in the car park where you purchase tickets to the sites. The ticket, which is really good value for money, also gives you access to the archaeological museum. Once inside you will think you have walked on to the set of the latest Indiana Jones movie. It is a place you really have to see with your own eyes; no words would ever do the place justice.

Beaches En Route To the Ruins

To get there stroll along the promenade that sets out from Sant Martí d’Empúries and L’Escala, two stunning fishing villages with a rich cultural history themselves. En route you will pass some gorgeous golden beaches where there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy water sports, including scuba diving and windsurfing. This historical paradise is surrounded by Mediterranean beaches and enchanting coves that will literally take your breath away.

Pack A Picnic

Stop off with friends and family along the way and enjoy a dip in the water or relax on the beach with a picnic made up with tasty bites from the local larder. Anchovies, not loved by all, are a speciality of the area and are absolutely fantastic. Make sure to pack some with your picnic goodies.
