Here is a guide of all 5 star hotels in Barcelona, arranged in order of popularity. All prices are for double rooms in January, and the ranking beside each hotel has been taken from the ranking in TripAdvisor at the time of writing in January 2014. Of course there are many other valuable review sites, so this is purely a rough yardstick. Currently some of these are quite reasonable for five star hotels, plus many have a variety of special offers.

Tip: quite a few have promotions on that if you stay for a certain amount of nights, you can get 1 night for free.

This award wining hotel offers a special, personalised exclusive stay in Barcelona. It also has a gastronomic experience which includes a superb tasting menu and a a night or two in one of the Deluxe or Junior Suites. The design contrasts the medieval with the modern, which in itself is quite an experience.

The concierge is great, he can even help to get tickets to Barcelona FC. The location couldn’t be any better, as it is in the Barri Gotic (Gothic area) and on top of that it has a lovely rooftop pool.

The award winning Alma Barcelona is also located in the Gothic Quarter of the city, putting it in the most perfect location. If you’re new to Barcelona, be aware of pickpockets in the area, and also like any other city or tourist trap, this is the area where the prices are at the highest.

The hotel staff are extremely helpful and will go out of their way to make recommendations if you ask them. The decor is nice, but some people may consider the lighting and effects to be a bit on the dark side, this is of course very subjective.

An award winning 5 star hotel in Barcelona that was renovated in 2009 as a grand luxury hotel, the El Palace was actually the Barcelona’s Ritz that originally opened in 1919. This is old world elegance with touches such as old-style Roman showers. It has retained its distinguished feel after its renovation, and is also located close to the Ramblas.

You can ramble and shop around the Ramblas to return to the hotel’s Mayan Luxury Spa to relax and rejuvenate for the evening’s enjoyment. This could include dining at the hotel’s Caelis Restaurant which has a Michelin star.

The beds in the hotel are possibly the most comfortable beds you’ll every sleep in! The hotel is not central, but within a metro trip of the city’s attractions, which by some could be considered to be an advantage.

The food is superb, with the young Chef Jordi Cruz in control of a creative, gourmet experience. He likes to merge tradition with creativity, and is the author of one book, with another one being penned currently. The chic surroundings, combined with this, plus staff who take pride in what they do, are the right ingredients for a lovely stay.

There is a spa, an outdoor swimming pool and a choice of suites, junior suites and penthouses. I would personally choose the Penthouse Sagrada Familia to get the views over this amazing place, from the penthouse’s private terrace.

I love the entrance of this hotel, with its columns of stone carvings. Located on the Paseo de Gracia this hotel ticks the boxes for luxury and location. The rooms are beautiful, tastefully designed and immaculate. The staff have been known to address you by your name and the service is of the type one would expect in Asia – the level of service all other hotels should aspire to. The food is excellent, as is the ambiance, making the Mandarin Oriental a haven in the perfect location in Barcelona.

On the Olympic Port, the Hotel Arts Barcelona overlooks the Med, and is next to Barcelona’s marina and famous beaches. It’s a relatively short walk to the Gothic Quarter, although not so close as some of the other hotels listed. However in this hotel you are by the sea, lush terraces, and some rooms have amazing views of the harbour and city.

It’s a modern property, which was designed by Bruce Graham, and is considered part of Barcelona’s cultural renaissance. I believe personally that it may be too modernistic for some guests, due to its hard edges, but these are balanced by touches of refinement and elegance. Top notch staff, very spacious rooms and wardrobes, contemporary luxury and superb location are the selling points of this hotel. Own downside however, at the time of writing, is that they do charge €25 per day for internet access.

You can choose from sophisticated 1, 2 or 4 bedroom apartments in a great location, making this a good option for families. Some even have views over to the Sagrada Familia, but of course you’d need to ask when reserving. Also the higher up you are, the less noise you’ll hear and most likely you’ll have better views. Apartments are quiet spacious.

The location of the Pullman Barcelona Skipper is good for those who want to enjoy nightlife as there are a good few clubs within a block or so. It’s also by Barceloneta beach, however in terms of being close to the old quarter, you have a bit of a walk.

The hotel is quite geared up for business, with 9 fully equipped event/meeting rooms, so if that is part of, or all of the purpose of your trip to Barcelona it could be a good choice. Rooms are quite spacious and service is also very good. In terms of its lead in price, it’s at the lower end of 5 star rates, but in my personal opinion it doesn’t have the same character as some of the other hotels in higher rating positions. However if it’s 5 star that you want at a slightly lower cost, then it could be a good option.

Originally built in 1850, it was designed by Josep Fontseré i Doménech, the Catalan carpenter and architect. So if its Romantic Classical style that you’re after, then this hotel is a good option, plus it is on the Ramblas.

A classy, stylish option where you can eat delicious food made from local ingredients. It has a nice atmosphere and the service is friendly but professional.

Belonging to Marriott Hotels, the Renaissance Barcelona is close to the Paseo de Gracia and also offers 491m2 of space for events and meetings. Inside it is modernistic but warmly and well decorated, with pleasant rooms. One reviewer mentioned noise issues, however he seems to be in the minority. There is a fitness centre but no swimming pool. One of its attractions is its rooftop bar, which is a nice place to hang out, plus they serve good food. If possible ask for a room with cathedral views.

This is one with a bit of a difference to the previous hotels reviewed, as it is a restored palace that sits atop Montjuic with fabulous views over the Ramblas and harbour. It has been lovingly and artistically restored, so that you can enjoy a combination of 1920s grandeur with cool, contemporary design. I also love the fact that the hotel is opposite to the lovely Costa i Llobera Gardens, making it a very attractive location indeed.

Rooms are filled with light,; they are elegant and modern, with views over the gardens, or the city and sea, and often their own balcony or terrace. There isn’t a big price difference currently between the two view options, so this is worth taking into account.

It is a friendly boutique hotel, which has a location that is attractive to those who love a good view and the serenity that come with these type of surroundings. The staff can’t do enough for you, they are very sweet without being obtrusive.

As a lover of art, I particularly appreciate the original pieces of art that are used in the decoration of the rooms here. They are Hindu, Egyptian and Roman. The Claris is quite well located, within around 10 to 15 minutes from all the main talking points of the city. For those of you who may be travelling with a furry member of your family, this hotel is pet friendly. The staff are exceptional and the overall experience is a luxurious treat, but at the same time you feel like you’re staying in a home away from home. This is a classy boutique 5 star hotel with a small rooftop pool.

Book a superior room if you fancy hanging out in a whirlpool. Staff are friendly, helpful and speak English.

What shines through amongst other things about this hotel, is the sparkling attitude and service of the staff. Beside Port Vell, this hotel is far away from the hustle and bustle, but you can still walk into the heart of the city within 10 to 15 minutes. It has a wonderful gym and a small pool on the top floor, and even if you don’t feel like exercising do pop up at night just to check out the views. Positive experience with staff, although not all of them speak English. It is a good choice for those who are catching a cruise ship, or if you like being close to the marina area of Barcelona city.
